Chapter 20

Flask

Eric crumpled to the ground, and the demon looked over at Leah, smiling widely.

“Ah, I see he brought along the little Mystic Asmodeus has been fawning over.” He pulled at his bindings and looked over his bloodied arms. “Hopefully this old, retired Knight has some energy still.”

The demon cocked his head unnaturally. A force rammed into Leah, picking her up and throwing her into the wall behind her. She slammed her elbow, a sharp pain blinding her before she fell to her knees, gasping for air.

“This is the best the child of Elizabeth Mizrahi has to offer?” A croaking, almost animal sound came from the demon’s throat. “Her talents clearly don’t run in the family.”

The fear festered inside her, followed again by voices whispering in her ear. She couldn’t hurt Eric, not again. Her gaze shifted to the man in front of her, imagining the energy inside her condensing down into the smallest of points. She threw her hand forward, letting out the force built up inside her. The energy came out in three short bursts, flinging through the air and cutting the demon on the cheek, arm, and slicing into the wall behind him.

The demon stuck out a long tongue that stretched up to his cheek like some horrific tentacle, lapping up the blood on his fresh cut. “Ah, much better than the drunk who brought you. Where have you been hiding?”

Leah stood up on shaky legs and held her elbow, the pain already subsiding. “Fuck off.”

“Oh, don’t be like that,” the demon said, grabbing a fistful of Leah’s hair and pulling her close as he sniffed her. “Ah, the scent of pine. It’s close to here. Asmodeus is quite angry he couldn’t finish the job.” He looked over at the crumpled Eric and scoffed. “But now that you're part of their little club, that makes you even more delectable.” He licked his lips. “Just like your mother!”

More anger grew inside Leah.

“You know,” the demon said. “I heard she screamed when he cut her.”

“Shut up!” Leah shouted.

In an instant, the demon leaped across the room, grabbing her by the throat and propping her up against the wall. She kicked him and clawed at his arm, but he stared into her eyes, baring his teeth. He brought his face closer, sniffing her hair. “Such energy. I wonder what fun we could have together.”

Leah felt something pressing against the inside of her head, a pressure that was oozing into her skull, forcing its way into her mind. The pain seared through her body, and the room faded. She was going to die here, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

The demon smiled, his eyes the last thing she may ever see as his grip tightened around her neck.

The push against her mind suddenly stopped, and she no longer felt the squeezing grip on her throat. Color came back to her as the demon freed her, clutching at his own throat, his eyes popping out of his head.

Leah slumped to the floor, out of reach of the man’s flailing arms.
